SYSTEM CONTROL AND DESIGN ACADEMY
| Lead Subaward Institution: Apple Valley Unified School District | Pathway: Engineering |
| Date Funded: July 2024 | Amount Awarded: $500,000 | Project Completion: December 2026 |
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Apple Valley Unified School District’s System Control and Design Academy (SCADA) at Granite Hills High School connects hands-on technical learning with college and career opportunities in engineering, automation, and advanced manufacturing. Through collaboration with Victor Valley College and regional industry partners, the project strengthens students’ preparation for further education and the workforce.
The project supports practical training with industry-aligned equipment, including robotics and mechanical systems. Students apply classroom concepts through technical labs and projects while preparing to earn industry-recognized certifications. Investments in equipment, instructor training, and curriculum integration help students develop skills that connect directly to workplace expectations.
Collaboration with Victor Valley College supports the development of dual enrollment opportunities and pathways into college engineering and technical programs. Industry engagement, including the SCADA Industry Partner Lunch, gives students opportunities to showcase their work, connect with professionals, and explore potential careers.
By combining technical instruction, certification opportunities, and college and employer connections, SCADA helps students build the skills and confidence to advance from high school into further education and careers in technical fields.
Recovery with Equity Strategies: Cultivate inclusive, engaging and equity-oriented learning environments; Retain students through inclusive support; Provide high-tech, high touch advising; Support college preparation and early credit
“When students build, test, and solve problems with industry equipment, they begin to see where their skills can take them. SCADA helps connect that hands-on learning to opportunities in college and the workforce.”
PROJECT IMPACT
The SCADA Equipment Upscale project is helping students translate classroom learning into practical skills that align with engineering and advanced manufacturing careers. By integrating professional equipment, hands-on labs, industry certifications, and a progressive technical course sequence, Granite Hills High School is creating a stronger bridge between high school education, college, and the workforce. Strong student continuation within the pathway, combined with the developing Victor Valley College dual enrollment opportunity, is helping establish a more connected route for students to pursue future technical education and careers.
Fully implemented new SCADA equipment into student training labs and the program’s course sequence.
Achieved 100% continuation of current Mechatronics students into the Flex Manufacturing course.
Advanced planning with Victor Valley College to launch a dual enrollment course at Granite Hills High School.
